This is something I hear almost every day as a professional dog trainer. For a lot of dog owners they have taken the scatter gun approach — tried all sorts of approaches without much consistency or real guidance. Punishment is a vital part of training too, although probably not in the way you think. As a professional trainer for over 10 years I prescribe to a variety of different methods in order to effectively help your dog quickly and safely.
